2030 World Cup: The Tramway arrives in Temara

Morocco is actively preparing to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, and one of the flagship projects of this preparation is the extension of the tramway network linking Rabat, Salé and Temara. This ambitious initiative, recently approved, aims to extend the existing 24 km network to add an additional 45 km, creating a smoother and more efficient link between these three cities.

A strategic project for urban mobility

The first phase of this project is underway with the selection of the company responsible for the project management of the preparatory works and the relocation of the networks. This stage marks the concrete start of the development work for the extension of the tramway to Témara, a strategic city for the region’s urban transport network.

The extension project will be carried out in two separate phases, with completion scheduled for 2030, the year Morocco will host the World Cup. The first phase, running until 2028, will see the creation of 23.7 km of new lines. These lines will serve the districts of Hay Riad, Témara, Yaâcoub El Mansour and Sala Al Jadida. The second phase, scheduled for 2030, will add 21.3 km of additional lines, connecting Agdal, Al Bustane, Youssoufia, Laâyayda and Rahma.

Improving urban connectivity

Line number 3, once completed, will reach Temara via the urban center of Hay Riad in Rabat. A connecting branch between L1 and L2 in Rabat will also provide service to the Agdal LGV station. Line 4 will connect the municipality of El Youssoufia to Rabat, while line 6 will provide access to the future Al Bustane urban area.

This development of the tramway network is not limited to a simple extension of existing lines. It is a project to modernize and optimize urban mobility, aiming to reduce traffic jams and offer an ecological and efficient alternative to motorized transport. The inhabitants of Rabat, Salé and Témara will thus benefit from an improved public transport system, with reduced journey times and increased accessibility to the different neighborhoods.

Economic outlook and impacts

The extension of the tramway is also a lever for economic development for the region. By facilitating daily travel, this project should stimulate commercial activities and attract new investments. The creation of new tramway lines will also lead to employment opportunities, both during the construction phase and after commissioning.

By investing in this major project, Morocco is demonstrating its desire to position itself as a major player in sustainable urban mobility in Africa. The extension of the tramway is a key component of the national strategy to modernize transport infrastructure in preparation for the 2030 World Cup, while improving the quality of life of citizens.

In short, the arrival of the tramway in Temara represents much more than just an extension of lines. It is a significant step forward for urban mobility, the local economy and Morocco’s preparation to host one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world. The work that begins this week is a first step towards a new era of public transport for Rabat, Salé and Temara, promising a more connected and prosperous future.
