At least 20 people died Tuesday in the accident of a bus that fell from a bridge on the outskirts of Venice, in northern Italy, said the city’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, quoted by the newspaper La Repubblica.
“A tragedy struck our community this evening”, causing “many victims among the people present on board the bus which fell” from a bridge near Mestre, on the mainland, said on X (formerly Twitter) the mayor, describing “an apocalyptic scene”.

The bus “caught fire” after the fall
According to Venice firefighters, the bus “caught fire” after falling from a bridge spanning a railway line between Mestre and Marghera, two towns that are part of Venice.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni immediately expressed “her deep condolences”. “I am in contact with Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and Minister (of Transport) Matteo Salvini to follow the news of this tragedy,” she said in a statement.
