Alert in Morocco: Discovery of the “FLiRT” Mutation of COVID-19

A new mutation of the COVID-19 virus, called “FLiRT”, has been identified by the Center for Virology, Infectious and Tropical Diseases in Rabat. Of the 16 samples analyzed, three were confirmed to carry this sub-variant of the Omicron lineage.

Professor Mustapha Fahim, director of the center, indicated that although the presence of “FLiRT” is still limited in Morocco, its genetic characteristics suggest a potential for rapid propagation. This discovery raises concerns about its impact on public health, especially for immunocompromised or fragile individuals.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), ‘FLiRT’ has similar symptoms to previous strains, such as fever and runny nose. However, it appears to particularly target the elderly and children, thereby increasing risks among these vulnerable groups.

Health authorities are noting an increase in “FLiRT” cases in the United States and Germany, heightening concerns internationally. Professor Fahim emphasizes the need to maintain increased vigilance and strict precautionary measures to stem its spread.

In conclusion, although research continues to better understand this new variant, it is imperative to strengthen international surveillance and control efforts. Early detection and rapid response remain critical to containing “FLiRT” and preserving global public health.
