Atlas Lions: Hakim Ziyech and three other major names could miss the selection – Media7

The Moroccan national team could face the Central African Republic without several of its stars. Brahim Diaz, Chadi Riad, Romain Saïss and Hakim Ziyech are all in danger of being left out of the squad for the two October games. Injuries and fitness issues are at play, leaving coach Walid Regragui facing difficult choices.

Real Madrid midfielder Diaz and Crystal Palace defender Riad are still recovering. Their injuries require time, and a return too soon could worsen their condition. “The doctors are cautious, and we understand why,” said a source close to the team.

Ziyech at the heart of the debates

As for Hakim Ziyech, his situation is particularly worrying. Still not recovered from a knee injury, he has missed the last few games with Galatasaray. Rumours had circulated, suggesting that his recent criticism of Arab governments, in connection with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, could influence his selection. But these speculations seem unfounded. Everything indicates that his absence is solely due to his physical condition.

Romain Saïss, meanwhile, is in good shape but lacking playing time with Al-Sadd in Qatar. “No games, no rhythm,” says one analyst, summing up the team captain’s situation.

A challenge for Regragui

Regragui is due to make his decision on October 2. The preparatory training camp starts shortly after, and it is essential that each player selected is in full possession of his abilities. But with four key players still pending, the coach will have to decide: bet on stars who are still convalescing or opt for lesser-known but fitter alternatives.

The matches on October 12 and 15 against the Central African Republic are not mere formalities. Every point counts in the race to qualify for the 2024 AFCON, and the Moroccan team must rise to the occasion, even without some of its best players.
