‘Let him cackle’: Moroccans call for poultry boycott as prices soar
In response to the soaring prices of poultry, a boycott campaign has emerged on social media in Morocco, under the hashtag “Let him cackle”. The initiative aims to put pressure on producers and traders to bring prices back to more affordable levels.
In recent weeks, poultry prices have reached unprecedented heights, seriously affecting the purchasing power of Moroccan citizens. To counter this situation, social media users have launched a call for general mobilization to boycott poultry products. This campaign hopes to encourage market players to adjust their prices.
The reasons for this price surge are varied. Some observers attribute the increase to speculation and the greed of middlemen, while others point to the lack of rain and the increase in the cost of animal feed as the main causes. Either way, the result is increased pressure on the budgets of Moroccan households, which rely on poultry as an affordable source of protein.
Calls are growing to extend this boycott campaign nationwide. On Facebook, messages of support are spreading quickly, with recommendations for maximizing the impact of the boycott. One message encourages consumer solidarity: “By joining forces, we can bring down the price of chicken to less than 15 dirhams per kilo. Let’s boycott together to make poultry accessible to all.”
In addition to the current price surge, citizens are concerned about a possible spread of this trend to white meat prices. Parliamentarians had already expressed concerns about the potential impact of rising costs on white meat, which is essential for a significant part of the population.
This boycott campaign represents a collective attempt by Moroccan consumers to face the current crisis and remind producers and traders of the importance of maintaining reasonable prices.
