New highway between Fez and Marrakech?

Morocco is preparing to start the construction of a strategic highway between Fez and Marrakech. The project, announced recently, aims to improve connections between these two large cities, separated by more than 500 km. This is a major breakthrough in the country’s road network.

Engineering studies will begin next week, marking the starting point for this infrastructure that has been awaited for years. The project provides for a passage through Beni Mellal, Khénifra and Meknes. This route will not only facilitate travel, but will also strengthen trade between these regions.

Authorities say the prospect of hosting the 2030 World Cup has accelerated the development of this highway, long delayed by preliminary studies and financial obstacles.

A tourist and economic impact

The new motorway should transform the region’s tourist and commercial dynamics. It will allow a considerable reduction in travel time, which could attract more visitors to Fez and Marrakech, two emblematic tourist cities in Morocco. The inhabitants of Beni Mellal and Khénifra, hitherto landlocked, also hope to benefit from a new economic boost.

The project will be carried out in two phases. The first will connect Beni Mellal to Khenifra, while the second will extend from Khenifra to Fez, via Meknes. Each step will be the subject of in-depth technical studies.

Towards a modernization of infrastructures

This project is part of a broader strategy to modernize Moroccan infrastructure. Other similar projects could be launched in the years to come, in particular to strengthen regional connections and support the country’s economic ambitions.

Morocco seems to want to establish itself as a key player in infrastructure in the North African region.
