Olive Oil Prices: No Spike in Sight?
With the approach of the olive harvest season in Morocco, rumors are circulating about a spike in olive oil prices this year. Some sources suggest that the price per liter could reach 150 dirhams due to successive droughts and the decline in olive production in several regions.
Farmers say rumors are exaggerated
However, farmers in the regions of Kalaat Sraghna, Beni Mellal, Ghercif, and other areas known for their olive production, have denied this information. According to them, it is still too early to claim such a dramatic increase in prices. They insist that this year’s production should be equivalent to that of last year, thus dismissing pessimistic forecasts.
Producers say speculators and middlemen are spreading these rumors to sell oil at inflated prices even before harvests have fully begun. They point out that such a strategy aims to take advantage of consumer uncertainty.
Price comparison with last year
Last year, the price of olive oil in Morocco ranged from 75 to 90 dirhams per liter, depending on the quality of the oil and the region where it was produced. Although some areas have been affected by repeated droughts, farmers believe that this year’s production should not see any major change compared to 2023.
They insist that the price increase to 150 dirhams, as spread by some rumors, is highly unlikely. Farmers in these regions therefore call for caution and recommend consumers not to be influenced by these unfounded speculations.
Reality or business strategy?
It is important to note that the olive harvest season has not yet fully begun, and olive oil prices are subject to fluctuations depending on demand, weather conditions and the quality of the harvest. However, farmers maintain that these drastic increases are not justified and that the situation is likely to remain stable, barring any unforeseen extreme weather events.
In conclusion, although there are rumors of a potential spike in olive oil prices in Morocco, current information provided by farmers in the main producing regions suggests relative stability for the coming season.
