One step closer to the tunnel linking Morocco and Spain
The Morocco-Spain rail tunnel project is reaching a new milestone. The Spanish association SECEGSA has just launched a major seismic study to strengthen existing analyses of the project.
The Spanish Research Institute has announced the rental, with an option to purchase, of four underwater seismometers. These devices, developed by the Spanish Army Observatory, will be used for six months. The contract is worth 487,872 euros.
The 42-kilometre tunnel will connect Punta Paloma in Tarifa, Spain, to Malabata, near Tangier. It will consist of two 7.9-metre diameter tunnels and a 6-metre service corridor. Cross-passages will be built every 340 metres, according to Europa Sur.
According to Newsweek, the total cost of the project is estimated at 6 billion euros. The tunnel is expected to carry 12.8 million passengers and 13 million tons of goods each year.
This project is seen as a strategic step forward to connect Europe and Africa.
