One Year in Prison for Tiznit Restaurateur Responsible for the Poisoning of 38 People
The Tiznit Court of First Instance sentenced, on Monday, the owner of a snack bar to a one-year prison sentence and a fine of 20,000 dirhams for causing food poisoning that affected 38 people. The convict will also have to pay compensation of 5,000 dirhams to the victims.
The public prosecutor had prosecuted the restaurateur for offering and selling food products that were dangerous to human health and for placing on the market products that did not comply with safety standards. The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday, June 25, 2024, in a snack bar located on Al Michwar Square in Tiznit. More than 30 people were affected, some suffering from serious symptoms, according to local and national media sources.
Reactions and Criticisms
The Moroccan Association for Human Rights in Tiznit expressed deep concern over this incident, criticizing the slowness of municipal services and local authorities responsible for health surveillance and citizen safety. It recalled that the snack in question had already been involved in a similar scandal a few months ago, when the administrative police of the municipality of Tiznit seized a significant quantity of spoiled meat intended for consumption.
Call for Responsibility
The association urged all institutions responsible for the health and safety of citizens to fully assume their responsibilities. It stressed the importance of strengthening quality and safety controls of food products sold in markets and public establishments, as well as strict enforcement of the law.
