Orca Attacks in Morocco: Fishermen Call for Urgent Measures
Moroccan fishermen are sounding the alarm over the recurring appearance of orcas along the country’s Mediterranean coast, which has caused significant material losses and raised concerns about the safety of fishing activities. These large cetaceans, known by the scientific name Orcinus orca, have been observed in groups, causing considerable damage to artisanal fishing boats.
According to local sources, several incidents involving orcas have been reported in recent months, mainly in the regions of Nador, Al Hoceima, and around the Strait of Gibraltar. Abdelkader Twerbi, national secretary of the National Union of Sailors and Fishing Captains, said the situation has pushed many fishermen to migrate to Atlantic waters, away from areas where orcas are most active.
The increase in attacks has led to pressing demands for financial compensation from the authorities, particularly in the Tangier region. Abdelaziz Lachiri, president of the Moroccan Confederation of Artisanal Fishing, expressed frustration at the authorities’ inaction, despite multiple requests for support. Lachiri stressed the need for scientific intervention to better understand and manage this threat.
Dr. Hicham Meski, an expert in marine ecology, sheds light on the behavior of orcas. He explains that these marine predators, although inherent to Moroccan waters, have developed aggressive behavior in recent years, particularly toward sailboats. However, interactions with Moroccan fishing boats, although less frequent, remain a concern.
Despite the impressive speed and size of orcas, Meski reassures that these marine animals are unlikely to approach beaches, reducing the risk to swimmers. However, for fishermen, the threat remains very real, and urgent action is needed to protect their livelihood while respecting the ecosystem.
As orcas continue to frequent the Moroccan coast, the need to find a balance between their protection and the safety of fishermen becomes increasingly pressing. Authorities are called upon to act quickly to ensure harmonious cohabitation between humans and nature.
