Rabat: Environmentalists denounce the “Palmisation” of Moroccan cities

The environmental movement Maroc Environnement 2050 organized a demonstration last Saturday in front of the Parliament in Rabat to protest against the policy of massive planting of palm trees in urban areas. Under the slogan “Stop planting palm trees, plant trees”, the activists denounced a practice that they consider dangerous for the urban environment.

Protesters have expressed opposition to the cutting down of existing trees and replacing them with palms or other smaller plants. They also criticize the trend of reducing trees to their minimum form, thus depriving cities of their natural vegetation cover and the ecological benefits that come with it.

Palmization

According to activists, the “palmification” of cities harms urban biodiversity and negatively affects the quality of life of residents. They call for more ecological management of green spaces, with better regulation of tree pruning and maintenance. The movement also calls for the implementation of landscaping plans adapted to the bioclimatic specificities of each Moroccan city, in order to preserve and strengthen the tree heritage.

By organizing this first “tree march,” activists hope to raise national awareness about the importance of maintaining diverse and sustainable green spaces in urban areas. They say this action is just the beginning of a series of mobilizations aimed at protecting Morocco’s urban environment.
