Red Meat Prices Soar: Moroccans Face Exorbitant Costs

Red meat prices are rising alarmingly, three weeks after Eid al-Adha, and continue to weigh heavily on Moroccan consumers’ budgets. In Casablanca, the wholesale price of a kilogram of beef has reached 90 dirhams, while that of lamb stands at 110 dirhams.

For consumers, the situation is even more critical. The retail price of beef varies between 100 and 115 dirhams per kilo, depending on the market, while that of lamb currently fluctuates between 140 and 160 dirhams per kilo. These prices are far beyond the purchasing power of average families.

Industry professionals predict that this increase will continue in the coming days, particularly with the arrival of Moroccans living abroad and the upcoming wedding season.

Several factors explain this surge in prices. First, red meat prices are not regulated and are determined by supply and demand. In addition, six consecutive years of drought have seriously affected the cost of livestock feed, thus increasing production costs.

Production costs on the rise

Ranchers and farmers face increasing costs to feed and maintain their livestock. Dwindling natural pastures are forcing the use of expensive livestock feed, which is reflected in meat prices throughout the supply chain.

This situation puts increased pressure on consumers, particularly those with low incomes, who are struggling to absorb these price increases. Many households are turning to cheaper alternatives, such as poultry or plant-based proteins, although these options do not always meet the culinary or nutritional preferences of Moroccan families.

Uncertain outlook

The future of red meat prices remains uncertain. Climatic conditions, fluctuations in production costs and market dynamics will continue to influence prices. Government intervention to regulate prices could be considered, but will have to balance the interests of consumers and producers.

In the meantime, consumers and industry professionals must adapt to this new economic reality, hoping for better days and more affordable prices.
