Shortage and speculation? Why tomato becomes a luxury product in Nador

Tomato prices have reached record levels in the province of Nador, oscillating between 11 and 12 dirhams per kilogram on the weekly markets. This unexpected outbreak arouses lively dissatisfaction among consumers, while this vegetable is an essential ingredient in Moroccan cuisine, especially during the month of Ramadan, a period of high demand in fresh products.
Fruit and vegetable sellers also express their frustration in the face of this increase. “The wholesale prices have exceeded all forecasts,” deplores an itinerant merchant. For his part, Karim Laguna, treasurer of the Moroccan association of users and professionals on the wholesale market, attributes this increase to recent floods and the cold wave that struck the main agricultural regions of the country.
This increase in food products increases pressure on Moroccan households already affected by a difficult economic context. Several observers call on the government and the Ministry of Agriculture to intervene to regulate prices and ensure a certain stability on the market.
