Storm Jana in Morocco: filled dams, destroyed roads, lost lives

Storm Jana struck Morocco this weekend, causing violent gusts, torrential rains and large snowfall. If this precipitation reduces persistent drought, they also caused deadly floods and important material damage.

Precipitation led to a significant rise in the level of the dams. According to the official “MAA Dialna” website, the Wadi Mokhazn dam recorded an increase of 12.5 million cubic meters, reaching a filling rate of 71 %. The Al Wahda dam captured 13.3 million cubic meters, bringing its filling rate to 38.8 %. These figures mark a significant improvement in the country’s water resources.

However, the storm highlighted the weaknesses of infrastructure in certain risk areas. In Berkane, a little girl died after falling into a sewer pipe with her father. In the town of Had Boumoussa, a 10 -year -old child was swept away by flood waters. Damaged roads, weakened bridges and landslides have paralyzed several regions.

Faced with this situation, the authorities have implemented emergency measures, including the suspension of prices in certain schools and the mobilization of rescue teams. Local vigilance committees remain alert to prevent new dramas and restore traffic on the affected axes.
