The Truth About Tsunami Rumors in Morocco in 2025
Moroccan authorities have been keen to allay fears about a possible tsunami in 2025, fueled by viral videos and speculation on social media. The National Center for Geophysics says the likelihood of such an event next year is “extremely low.”
Recent videos, relayed massively on social networks, report supposed alarmist predictions of a devastating tsunami in the Mediterranean Sea in 2025. The sources of these assertions come from so-called experts and clairvoyants, without proven scientific basis, which has however created a wave of panic among Moroccan citizens, particularly in coastal areas.
Internet users associated these rumors with a scientific research project led by UNESCO, Chouaïb Doukkali University and a scientific center in El Jadida. This project, dedicated to assessing the risks of tsunamis in the region, has been misinterpreted by some users, reinforcing the confusion. In reality, this initiative aims exclusively to raise awareness and prepare populations for potential risks, without specific prediction of events.
To clarify the situation, the National Center for Geophysics explained that current studies on the risks of tsunamis indicate a low probability of occurrence in the coming years, or even the next decades. The warning signs visible on some Moroccan beaches, such as those of El Jadida, serve to remind residents of the measures to take in the event of an alert, and not to anticipate imminent danger.
Moroccan authorities encourage citizens to rely only on information provided by official and scientific sources, in order to counter disinformation and baseless alarmist rumors.
