Tragedy in Sidi Allal Tazi: Adulterated alcohol leaves 15 dead and hundreds hospitalized

Sidi Allal Tazi, Morocco – Consumption of adulterated alcohol caused the death of 15 people in Sidi Allal Tazi, causing a major health crisis. Ten deaths were recorded at the Idrissi Provincial Hospital Center in Kenitra, and five others in regional hospitals. More than a hundred people were hospitalized due to this serious poisoning.

An Acute Health Crisis

According to Fouad Archane, director of the Idrissi Provincial Hospital Center in Kenitra, cases have flocked to the establishment since Monday evening. “We received 157 cases, of which 20 were transferred to Rabat for specialized care,” he said. Of these cases, 24 are currently stabilized and receiving adequate care, although 4 are suspected of being involved in the distribution of contaminated alcohol.

Reaction of the Authorities

Health authorities in Rabat-Salé-Kénitra confirmed 114 cases of methanol poisoning between Monday June 3 and Wednesday June 5, a situation which plunged the local community into worry and panic. Many people rushed to the hospital for fear of contamination.

An investigation is underway, supervised by the competent public prosecutor’s office, to dismantle the network responsible for the production and distribution of this deadly alcohol. Authorities are working hard to identify and arrest the culprits to prevent future tragedies.
