A US woman has been charged with first-degree attempted murder after she was accused of poisoning her husband’s coffee every day for months with bleach. The woman’s husband decided to investigate his wife’s actions when he began noticing a foul taste in his coffee back in March while they were stationed in Germany.

Roby Johnson, who is serving in the US air force, and his wife Melody Felicano Johnson were going through a divorce but living together with their child, reported CNN.

How did the husband collect evidence?

The court documents stated that Roby Johnson used pool testing strips to discover his coffee pot “showed high levels of chlorine.” He also allegedly used a hidden camera to discover his wife pouring an unknown substance into the coffee maker. Johnson said he pretended to continue drinking the coffee so he could wait until they returned to the US before filing a police report.

Upon return to the US, Johnson said he used multiple hidden cameras over several days “showing Melody take bleach, pour it into a container and then walk over and pour it into the coffee maker.”

Why did she attempt to kill her husband?

As per investigators, the husband “believes she was trying to kill him to collect death benefits.” However, the accused wife pleaded not guilty at an arraignment last week. She has been assigned a public defender and has been lodged at the Pima County Jail pending her next scheduled court appearance on September 6.

As per the report, the bond for the woman is set at $250,000 as prosecutors told the judge a high bond was necessary because the suspect recently bought a house in the Philippines near family and is considered a flight risk.
