Weather Alert: Morocco Faces Echoes of Storm Dana?

Morocco is feeling the muted effects of Storm Dana, which recently hit Spain and Portugal. According to Lahoucine Youabed, head of the communications department at the Moroccan Meteorological Directorate, the impact on the kingdom remains limited, but notable weather phenomena have been observed.

The General Directorate of Meteorology has issued an orange alert bulletin for several provinces, predicting thunderstorms of 15 to 25 mm, accompanied by hail and gusts of wind. The regions concerned include Midelt, Ifrane, Beni Mellal, Al Haouz, Tinghir, Azilal, Khenifra and Boulemane.

These conditions are the result of cold air in the upper layers of the atmosphere, leading to the formation of unstable clouds. Although less intense than in the Iberian Peninsula, these events have caused localized thunderstorms and hailstorms in some areas of the country.

For Wednesday, meteorologists anticipate the persistence of storm cells, particularly in the High and Middle Atlas, as well as in the south of the eastern region. The sky will be partly cloudy in the Little Atlas, the southeast and the southern provinces, with the possibility of localized showers.

Temperatures will remain relatively high in the Souss region, the southeast and the extreme south of the Saharan provinces. Low clouds and fog formations are expected in the morning and night on the phosphate plateaus and near the coasts.

Here is a table of temperatures expected for Wednesday in the main cities:

City Minimum Temperature (°C) Maximum Temperature (°C) Oujda 22 32 Bouarfa 23 36 Al Hoceima 22 28 Tetouan 19 30 Sebta 19 30 Melilla 22 28 Tangier 17 26 Kenitra 17 26 Rabat 18 25 Casablanca 19 27 El Jadida 20 27 Settat 18 33 Safi 20 30 Khouribga 21 35 Beni Mellal 24 39 Marrakech 23 39 Meknes 16 33 Fez 18 34 Ifrane 16 30 Taounate 24 36 Errachidia 26 37 Ouarzazate 25 37 Agadir 16 33 Essaouira 21 22 Laayoune 22 33 Es-Semara 22 38 Dakhla 20 26 Aousserd 26 40 Lagouira 20 27 Midelt 22 32

Sea conditions will be calm to slightly rough in the Mediterranean and the Strait of Gibraltar, but rough to strong between Mehdia and Tarfaya. The rest of the coastline will experience slightly rough to rough seas.

Moroccan meteorological authorities are closely monitoring the situation, ready to issue new alerts if necessary. The population is urged to stay informed and follow the recommendations of local authorities, particularly in mountainous and coastal regions where weather conditions can change rapidly.

This complex weather situation highlights the importance of vigilance in the face of climatic phenomena, even when they occur at a distance. It also recalls the diversity of the Moroccan climate, influenced by its unique geographical position between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, as well as by its varied relief.
