Weather alert: Thunderstorms and red alert in Figuig
The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a weather alert for several provinces of the Kingdom, announcing thunderstorms accompanied by hail and gusts of wind. These bad weather conditions are expected this Wednesday and Thursday, with a high level of vigilance, particularly in the province of Figuig.
Figuig under red alert
According to the DGM forecasts, significant downpours, ranging from 70 to 90 mm, will hit Figuig from this Wednesday at 1 p.m., and will continue until Thursday at 3 a.m. This precipitation will be accompanied by hail and gusts of wind, making the weather conditions particularly dangerous.
Faced with this situation, the DGM has placed the province of Figuig under a “red” level of alert, the highest in the weather alert scale. Local authorities are calling for caution and recommending that residents avoid all non-essential travel.
Other provinces affected by bad weather
In addition to Figuig, several other provinces will also be affected by these thunderstorms, although to a lesser extent. The provinces of Jerada, Boulemane, Midelt and Errachidia will experience rainfall of between 50 and 70 mm. These regions have been placed on “orange” level alert, indicating a moderate but still worrying risk.
In the provinces of Oujda-Angad and Taourirt, the expected rainfall amounts are slightly lower, between 30 and 50 mm, but the “orange” alert remains in place for this Wednesday between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. Strong winds and hail could also affect these regions, increasing the risk of material damage and local flooding.
Authorities are calling on the population to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions. It is strongly advised to limit movement, especially in areas at risk of flooding, and to secure objects that could be blown away by the wind. Precautions to be taken also include monitoring rivers and wadis, which could overflow due to the heavy rainfall expected.
The DGM remains on alert and may issue additional updates depending on how the weather situation evolves. Emergency and civil protection services are also mobilized to respond to any emergency related to extreme weather conditions.
