Moroccans are facing a cold spell accompanied by rain this Thursday, December 12, 2024. Here are the main forecasts established by the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
Widespread rain and cold
Showers are expected on the Atlantic plains north of Essaouira and in the Rif. Temporary showers could also affect the Saïss, the Phosphates and Oulmès plateaus.
The cold persists with minimum temperatures dropping to -6°C in the Atlas. Night and morning frosts are expected in the Rif, the Atlas, the South-East and the high plateaus.
Mists or fogs will form in areas such as Gharb, Rehamna, the interior of Chaouia and the north of the Saharan provinces, making visibility difficult.
Wind and temperatures
The northern coasts will be swept by moderate to fairly strong wind gusts. Despite the cold, a slight increase in daytime temperatures is expected.
Maritime conditions will be calm, with fine to slightly rough seas in the Mediterranean and on the Strait, as well as gentle seas along the Atlantic coasts.

Weather explanations
In recent days, a drastic drop in temperatures has been observed across Morocco. According to the DGM, this situation results from the arrival of polar air masses from Europe. A jet stream diverted southward allowed this cold air to reach the Kingdom.
This phenomenon also weakened the anticyclone which dominated the Moroccan regions, opening the way to atmospheric disturbances. A “cold drop”, a depression isolated from the main current, is approaching the north of the country. This phenomenon catalyzes the attraction of cold European air, causing significant drops in temperatures and sporadic rains in the north, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday.
To monitor the evolution of these conditions, the DGM invites citizens to remain attentive to weather updates.
