Weddings in Morocco: The “Kommando” Face the Invasion of Social Networks
Specialized security services called “kommando” are in high demand in Morocco this summer due to growing concerns about privacy. These teams, tasked with preventing unauthorized photo-sharing at weddings and other private events, have become essential in protecting attendees from invasions of privacy.
The phenomenon has seen a notable expansion since last summer, particularly in large cities such as Casablanca and in some cities in the North. The use of “kommando” is now extending to localities such as Khouribga and Berrchid, as well as to Meknes, showing a growing awareness of the need to protect the privacy of individuals.
Sihem Bendadss, a team leader in Casablanca, says demand for the services has skyrocketed in response to photos being leaked on social media without consent. Her teams use stickers to cover phone camera lenses and inform guests of the restrictions. This has helped reduce incidents of unauthorized image posting while avoiding direct conflict with guests.
Despite this rise in power, the “kommando” must navigate carefully to stay within legal limits. Moroccan laws do not allow private agents to confiscate phones or search their contents. Mohamed Almo, a lawyer in Rabat, stresses the need for specific regulation to supervise these practices and ensure adequate protection of privacy without infringing on the rights of individuals.
The urgency of dedicated legislation is increasingly pressing to reconcile the effectiveness of privacy protection measures with compliance with existing laws. While the “kommando” continue to meet a growing demand, the regulations will have to evolve to better supervise this booming activity.
