Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while attending a college event in Utah on September 10.

An old tweet by Charlie Kirk has resurfaced after Donald Trump signed a proclamation requiring companies to pay $100,000 yearly for H-1B visas for foreign employees. Shared just six days before he was shot and killed at a Utah college event, the conservative influencer posted that “America does not need more visas for people from India.”

“Perhaps no form of legal immigration has so displaced American workers as those from India. Enough already. We’re full. Let’s finally put our own people first,” he tweeted on September 2. He was fatally shot on September 10 while debating gun violence during an event.

Charlie Kirk’s remark was in response to a tweet by US television presenter Laura Ingraham. “Don’t forget that any trade deal with India will require us to give them more visas. I’d rather not pay them in visas and trade deficits. Let Modi see what terms he can get from Xi instead.”

What are H-1B visas?

H-1B visas allow companies to hire foreign professionals. Applicants of this visa type, who must have at least a bachelor’s degree, are usually hired for high-skilled jobs, especially in the tech industry.

The United States has hiked the H-1B fee by up to $100,000. After signing the documents, Trump told reporters, “The main thing is, we’re going to have great people coming in, and they’re going to be paying.”

Addressing the matter, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said, “If you’re going to train somebody, you’re going to train one of the recent graduates from one of the great universities across our land. Train Americans. Stop bringing in people to take our jobs.”
