Pollution at Merkala Beach in Tangier: The authorities’ response

Merkala beach, a natural jewel popular with Tangiers, was the scene of a worrying incident. A reddish substance appeared on the surface of the water, causing widespread indignation.
Rapid intervention from the Municipality
Faced with this worrying situation, the municipality of Tangier deployed a commission of experts bringing together representatives of the local authority, the regional environmental directorate, the environmental unit of the royal gendarmerie, and the permanent service of delegated supervision.
The commission quickly went there to assess the nature of this substance and its impact on Merkala beach.
Samples and Analysis: Amandis at the Heart of Suspicions
The police, in collaboration with representatives of the service delegated to the company “Amandis”, took water samples with a view to in-depth analysis. Amandis, responsible for managing the water, electricity and liquid sanitation sector, is at the center of suspicion.
The commission also carried out in-depth investigations in the “Al Majd” industrial zone, revealing similar traces of the substance in the canal adjoining a dyeing company. The members of the commission entered the company’s premises, thus confirming the initial findings.
Urgent Measures and Committed Responsibilities
Following confirmation of the company’s involvement, the municipality took strict measures. The commission ordered Amandis to immediately stop the leak, considered an emergency measure to limit the damage.
Accountability procedures have also been initiated against the company in question, underlining the determination of the authorities to ensure transparency and protection of the environment.
This incident highlights the vigilance of the municipality of Tangier in the face of environmental threats. Collaboration between local authorities and private entities is crucial to guarantee the preservation of natural spaces and public health. Tangier remains mobilized to face these challenges and ensure a healthy environment for all.
