Torrential rains revive dams in southern Morocco

The recent stormy rains have been a boon for many areas in southern Morocco, especially for dams. The abundant rainfall has significantly increased water reserves, providing a much-needed boost after a long dry spell.
According to official data, the dams located in the Souss-Massa hydraulic basin have recorded a significant inflow of water. Indeed, until 8 a.m., this Sunday, September 8, 2024, more than 11.2 million cubic meters of water have been accumulated thanks to the recent torrential rains.
Significant contribution of dams
Statistics provided by the electronic portal “الماء ديالنا L’ma Dyalna”, managed by the Ministry of Equipment and Water, show that the Prince Moulay Abdellah dam, located in the province of Agadir Ida-Outanane, benefited from an inflow of 4 million cubic meters of water. This volume increased its filling rate to 23.8%.
In the province of Taroudant, the Oulouz dam recorded a water inflow of 4.84 million cubic meters, reaching a filling rate of 12%. These results demonstrate the importance of recent rainfall for water reserves in the south of the country.
At the same time, the Youssef Ben Tachfine dam saw its reserves increase by more than 700,000 cubic meters of water, which increased its filling rate to 11%, for a total capacity of 34.16 million cubic meters. The Sidi Abdellah dam received around 17,000 cubic meters, while the Mokhtar Soussi dam recorded more than 1.7 million cubic meters of water.
These figures demonstrate the significant impact of recent rains on the country’s water reserves, particularly in the south where demand for water is high, especially due to periods of prolonged drought.
An encouraging situation for water reserves
The rains of the last two weeks, particularly in the southern regions, have not only helped to replenish the dams, but have also had a positive impact on groundwater. This rainfall is particularly welcome in a region that often suffers from water stress.
Authorities continue to closely monitor water levels in dams, hoping that further rainfall will further improve the country’s water supply situation.
In sum, these recent water inflows mark a significant improvement in water reserves in several dams in southern Morocco, thus offering a glimmer of hope for the region’s water future.
